Full Day Kindergarten Approved - Parent Forum in February
At its regular meeting on December 15th, the District 105 School Board voted to approve a Full-Day Kindergarten Program to start in the 2015-16 school year.  The district will hold parent forums at 6:30 P.M. on February 17th and 25th to provide information about the program changes.  We will send home more details about these forums as the dates approach. Thanks to our parents and staff who served on the Kindergarten Committee which carefully studied the pros and cons of adding a full-day program.

Kindergarten Round-Up
Registration for kindergarten in District 105 will take place on March 12th.  At that time, parents will select whether they wish to enroll their child in the half-day program or full-day program.

Parent Survey for 2014-15 / Encuesta de los Padres para el 2014-15
This year District 105 will be administering a state-required parent survey entitled, 5Essentials: Organizing Schools for Improvement.  This short survey focuses on five areas that affect school success: leadership, collaboration, family involvement, school environment, and instruction.  I strongly encourage you to complete the survey as your feedback will provide us with critical information to assess how well we are serving our students and progressing toward our school and district goals.

The survey is designed to take approximately 10 minutes to complete and can only be completed online.  Parents who have children enrolled in more than one school will be asked to complete a survey for each school.

To complete the survey click HERE.

Thank you for your participation and support.

Common Core Parent Forum
The Common Core State Standards are a set of “national” standards adopted to replace our existing state standards. In the spring of this school year, the new Common Core assessment, PARCC, will be given to our students based on these challenging and robust new set of standards that will better prepare our students to be college and career ready. At the heart of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is the need to better prepare of students to be successful in college and the work place. Currently, research shows that United States students are significantly behind the College and Career Readiness benchmark standards.

These standards do not tell teachers how to teach, but they do help teachers figure out the knowledge and skills their students should have so that teachers can build the best lessons and environments for their classrooms. These standards help students and parents by setting clear and realistic goals for success. To read more about the CCSS implementation process in District 105 and find answers to the most frequently asked questions around CCSS, click here.

For more information on the Common Core Standards, please join us on February 19, 2015 for CCSS Parent Forum.  This evening event will provide essential information regarding the CCSS and teacher-run breakout sessions to experience the Common Core Standards "in action."  More information to come home soon!

Upcoming PARCC Assessment - March and April
This spring, our 3rd-8th grade students will be taking the PARCC assessment.  This test, which replaces ISAT, will assess students on the new Common Core English-Language Arts and Math standards.  The test is broken into two parts, the Performance-Based assessment given in March and the End-of- Year test administered in April. Over the last two years, District 105 teachers have aligned classroom instruction to the new standards and are sharing sample test items with students.
